Next Friday 16th of October marks Hamilton Day, the day Ireland's greatest mathematician William Rowan Hamilton had a eureka moment in making a ground breaking discovery while walking along the Royal Canal from Dunsink Observatory to the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) in Dublin.
Ireland’s scientific and mathematic tradition is the underpinning of our economic progress and in recognition of this, Ibec is delighted to partner with the RIA on Hamilton Day which includes a prize and a celebration lecture. The Hamilton Prize recognises the importance of supporting future generations of mathematicians in Ireland for which a number of undergraduate maths students across the island will be awarded for their achievement. The Hamilton lecture will be given by the renowned ‘Mozart of Maths’, Professor Terrance Tao of University of California, LA.
I would be delighted if you could join Ibec and the RIA for this year’s Hamilton Lecture and also encourage colleagues and family members to participate in what promises to be a unique opportunity. Please register your attendance here.
I will share further information about more Hamilton Day celebrations next week. In the meantime, you can engage with the celebration online on the Ibec and RIA twitter accounts or by following the hashtag #HamiltonDay
